Periyar Tiger Reserve, Thekkady
Once of the word’s most fascinating natural wildlife samctuaries, this reserve is noted for its geomorphology, wildlife and beautiful landscape. It was declared a Tiger Reserve in 1978.Entry to the sanctuary : 0600 – 1800 hrs
Main attractions : flora – Over 1800 flowering plants including 171 grass species. 143 species of orchids. The only south Indian conifer podocarpus wallichianus grows here.
Fauna – mammals : 35 species including wild elephants, graus, langur, sambar deer and wild boars that can be sighted from the boats, the Nilagiri tahr in the higher rocky areas, the endangered lion taild macaque confined to the evergreen interiors, bonnet macaque, Malabar giant squirral, tiger, jungle cat, sloth bear etc.
Birds : 265 species including migrants. The hornbill, strok, woodpecker, kingfisher, raptor darter, cormorant, grackle, cluster etc. Reptiles : Cobra, viber krait, a number of non – poisonous snakes, bicoloured frogs and crocodiles. Pisces : The peruyar lake and streams have several species of fish of India. The otter the only mammal of the lake, can be frequency spotted from the boat.
Plantations :
Tea cardamom, cloves, vanilla, ginger, turmeric, nutmag, cumin, garlic, star anise etc. trekking trails : Mangaladevi hills, Mullakkudy, Thannikudy, Vellimala etc.

Thekkady, India’s largest wildlife sanctuary, 114 kms off kottayam and 190 kms off kochi, is a dream destination for any tourist visiting India the 120 years old ‘surki’ dam buit across Periyar. Poorna in Vedic parlance, is a major tourist attraction in Thekkady. This sancturary is spread over an area of 777 sq. kms, surrounded by an artificial lack over an area of 25 sq kms.
The country’s sole Tiger reserve, Thekkady, with its bountiful treasures of tropical flora and fauna is the ultimate reservoir of many an endangered species and a rich tribal culture.
