Kodaikanal, 2135 metres (7000 feet) above sea level is a lovely hill resort which lies amidst the sylvan grandeur of the Palani Hills in the dindugal district. The nearest railhead is Kodaikanal Road on southern Railways. From Kodaikanal Road, one has to travel 80 kms. (50 miles) by road to reach Kodaikanal. Two-thirds of this motor journey up the hill through the ghats is an exciting experience with the vista and scenery changing at every bend and curve on the mountain road. Coffee plantations are found, a variety of trees and flowering plants greets the eye and fragrance of eucalyptus and roses fills the air. The most stricking attraction of Kodaikanal is the famous lake surrounded by a 5 kms. (3 miles) road. It was planned by Sir Vere Levenge and formed by banking up a small stream. A walk along the promenade skirting the lake, is an exhilarating experience and boating on the lake is a popular pastime for visitors. Best season is from April to June.Kodaikanal Tourist Attractions
Project View (56 kms) : Commands a panoramic view of the entire Vaigai Project.
Fairy Falls (5 kms): At the bottom of the falls, there is a bathing pool. Picnic spot.
Pillar rocks (7 kms): These rocks are three imposing boulders, about 4000 ft. in height behind which are shady places for picnics and below these boulders are several caves and chasms.
Berijam Lake (21 kms): This lake supplies drinking water to Periakulam Town. It is of special attraction to anglers. The scenery around here is beautiful.
Docter’s Delight (3 kms): Beyond the Pillar rocks is an old bluff on the way to Berijam Lake which commands a fine view.
Silver Cascade : The water falls may be seen as the tourist approaches Kodaikanal by the main Ghat road, it lies 8 kms away from the town.
Fisher’s Seat : (2 kms from Shenbaganur) is a curiously conical now in runis, erched on a precipice. From there one can see clouds raising above the jungle 3000 ft. below.
Dolphin’s No0se : (8 kms) From where one needs a good nerve to look at the yawning chasm below.
Perumal Peak (7329 ft) : This is a day’s trip from Nautral Saddle. Which is about 11 kms from Kodaikannal by road, the climb begins. It takes about 5 hours to climb the peak. The last slab being the stiffest. Also very often the peak is shrouded in mist. On a clear day, it commands the finest view to be seen in Kodaikanal.
Astro Physical Observatory (3 kms): Situated at 7688 ft, above the sea level was founded in 1899 and is the only one of its kind in India which has done a good deal of original work in Solar and Astrophysics, Visitors are allowed between 10 A.M. and 12 Noon on Fridays or by Previous appointment with and the Driector.
Shenbaganur Post Office : This post office become famous in 1947 for being the tidiest post office in India. the tidiness is seen even today. The sacred Heart College, a Philosophical Seminary founded in 1895 is also situated here.
Telescopes : This facility is available for tourists to see Madurai and Palani from Kodaikanal Hill on payment of 50p each.
Sacred Heart College Museum : Has a good collections made by student of Sacred College, Shenbaganur.
Gardents and Parks : Bryant Park is situated in the centre of the twon and is close to lake.
Chettiar Park : Lies in the north eastern corner of the town
Kurunji Andavar Temple : The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Murugan From its point one can see the beautiful views of the northern plains including the Palani hills and the Southern polains including the Vaigaidam. It is 3 kms from the lake.
Kulkkal Cave : It is a favourite camping site ideal for trekking. It is 40 kms from Kodaikanal.
